Using shielding fabric

Where this fabric works best

Shielding fabric reduces the radio-frequency (RF) signals that pass through it, such as Wi-Fi, mobile phone and 5G signals. Where you hang it decides what it screens, so start with where the signals come from.

Ways to use it

  1. 01

    Curtains or drapes over windows

Hang it at windows that face a phone mast, a neighbour's router or a busy street. Cover the whole window and let the fabric overlap the frame, because signals pass through gaps.

  2. 02

    Room divider or partition

Hang it from a ceiling track or a frame to screen part of a room, such as a desk or sleeping area, from a router or smart meter on the other side.

  3. 03

    Bed canopy

Make a canopy that hangs over the bed and reaches the floor on every side. If signals also come from below, add a shielding floor sheet under the bed.

  4. 04

Lining a wall behind a bed or desk

Fix it to the wall, or behind a headboard or panel, when the signal source is on the other side, for example a neighbour's Wi-Fi through a shared wall.

  5. 05

    Covering a cot or sofa

Drape it over the frame of a cot or the back of a sofa as a simple screen. Keep it secured outside the cot, out of a child's reach, and make sure air can flow freely.

How to choose

  • dB ratingHigher dB means more reduction: 20 dB reduces the signal by about 99%, 40 dB by about 99.99%. Check the figure covers the frequencies you want to screen, such as Wi-Fi, 4G or 5G.
  • WidthA wider roll means fewer seams on curtains and canopies. Plan your panels around the roll width and allow extra for overlaps and hems.
  • TransparencySheer fabrics let light and the view through, which suits windows and canopies. Less see-through fabrics give more privacy.
  • WashabilityCheck the care notes before washing. Some fabrics need a gentle cycle and a detergent without bleach or enzymes, such as YSHIELD Texcare.
