EMF Bed Canopies: Sizing, Grounding and How to Check One Works

EMF Bed Canopies: Sizing, Grounding and How to Check One Works

An EMF bed canopy is a net of shielding fabric that hangs around your bed and reduces the radiofrequency signal reaching you while you sleep. To work well it needs to be the right size, fully closed, and paired with shielding underneath the bed, because signal comes up through the floor as well as in from the sides. This guide covers sizing, shape, grounding, hanging and, most importantly, how to check it's actually working.

What does an EMF bed canopy actually do?

The fabric is woven with fine metal threads, usually silver or copper, which reflect and absorb radiofrequency signals such as Wi-Fi and mobile. When the canopy surrounds the bed, less of that signal reaches the space inside.

How much less depends on the fabric's rating, measured in decibels (dB) at a stated frequency, and on how well the canopy is closed. A canopy only shields radiofrequency. It has no effect on low-frequency fields from wiring and appliances.

What size canopy do you need?

Measure your bed, then allow extra room so the fabric doesn't touch you or drape onto the mattress. UK bed sizes are:

UK bed Mattress size
Single 90 × 190cm
Small double 120 × 190cm
Double 135 × 190cm
King 150 × 200cm
Super king 180 × 200cm

Choose a canopy whose base is bigger than the bed, with enough fabric to tuck under the mattress or reach the floor all the way round. A canopy that only just fits will leave gaps, and gaps reduce performance more than almost anything else.

Box or pyramid: which shape suits your room?

  • Box (rectangular) canopies hang from four corner points or a frame. They give more room inside and suit larger beds, but need more fixing points and more ceiling height.
  • Pyramid (single-point) canopies hang from one hook above the centre of the bed. They're quicker to put up and suit lower ceilings, but give less space near the edges.

For a double or larger, a box shape is usually more comfortable. For a single, or a room with a low ceiling, a pyramid is often easier.

Why does the floor matter?

This is the part people most often miss. A canopy hanging around the bed shields the sides and top, but signal can still come up from below, especially if a router or neighbour's equipment is on the floor below.

To close the gap, add a layer of shielding under the bed, such as a piece of shielding fabric laid beneath the mattress or on the floor under the bed, overlapping with the canopy's edges. Many people skip this step and then wonder why their readings inside the canopy are higher than expected.

Does a bed canopy need to be grounded?

Follow the manufacturer's guidance for your specific canopy. Radiofrequency shielding works by reflection and absorption, and many canopy manufacturers don't require grounding for it to work.

If grounding is recommended for your fabric, use the kit the manufacturer specifies and make sure the socket earth is properly connected. If you're unsure, ask us or ask an electrician. Don't improvise a grounding connection.

How do you hang a canopy without drilling the ceiling?

  • A freestanding frame around the bed, where the canopy hangs from the frame rather than the ceiling
  • A four-poster bed, if you have one, which gives you ready-made fixing points
  • Adhesive ceiling hooks rated for the canopy's weight, for lightweight pyramid canopies
  • Tension rods between walls, in alcoves or narrow rooms

Check the canopy's weight before choosing adhesive hooks. Shielding fabric is heavier than an ordinary mosquito net.

How do you test that it's working?

This is the step that tells you whether the purchase was worth it. You need an RF meter.

  1. Measure outside the canopy at pillow height, with it open. Note the reading.
  2. Close the canopy fully, tucked in all round.
  3. Measure inside, at the same spot and height, holding the meter inside the canopy.
  4. Check the edges and the floor. If one side reads higher, look for a gap there.

A second quick check: put your phone inside the closed canopy and call it from another phone. If it still rings clearly, signal is getting in somewhere. A well-closed canopy usually weakens reception noticeably.

How do you look after shielding fabric?

  • Hand wash or use a gentle cycle at a low temperature, if the manufacturer allows washing at all
  • No fabric softener or bleach, which damage the metal threads
  • Air dry; don't tumble dry or iron
  • Avoid sharp folds, which can break the threads

Always check the care label for your specific canopy.

What a canopy won't help with

  • Sources inside the canopy. A phone under your pillow is inside the shield. Put it in airplane mode or leave it outside.
  • Low-frequency fields from wiring, lamps and extension leads. These need distance, not RF shielding.
  • Gaps. A canopy left partly open performs far below its rating.

Frequently asked questions

Do EMF bed canopies work?

They reduce radiofrequency signal inside the canopy, which you can confirm with an RF meter. They need to be fully closed, with shielding underneath the bed, to perform well.

What size bed canopy do I need?

Larger than your mattress, with enough fabric to tuck in or reach the floor all round. A UK double mattress is 135 × 190cm and a king is 150 × 200cm.

Does a bed canopy need grounding?

Many don't, but follow the manufacturer's guidance for your specific canopy. If grounding is recommended, use the manufacturer's kit and a properly earthed socket.

Why is my meter still reading high inside the canopy?

Usually a gap at the edges, no shielding under the bed, or a source inside the canopy such as a phone. Check each in turn.

Will a canopy block my phone signal?

Inside the closed canopy, yes, usually noticeably. That's a sign it's working. Keep the phone outside or in airplane mode.

This article describes the measurable shielding performance of bed canopies. It does not make claims about sleep or health. UK and international health bodies do not consider harm to be established at typical domestic exposure levels. Reducing exposure is a personal choice.
