How Shielding Works

Shielding Types Explained

RF shielding is usually used for wireless signals such as WiFi, mobile phones, Bluetooth, smart meters and nearby masts. RF shielding materials can include conductive fabrics, meshes, films, paints, foils and canopies. Gaps, seams, windows, doors and coverage direction can all affect performance.

Electric fields are linked to voltage around wiring, sockets, cables and powered equipment. Electric field shielding often uses conductive materials and grounding where appropriate. Grounding should be handled safely and should not be guessed.

Magnetic fields are linked to electrical current flow and are not reduced in the same way as RF signals. They can occur near power cables, breaker panels, transformers, appliances and electrical risers. Specialist magnetic shielding materials can help redirect or reduce low-frequency magnetic fields when placed correctly.

Direction, overlap, gaps, grounding, distance and material choice all affect performance. A material placed in the wrong area may not reduce the field in the position the customer actually cares about.
